    Ace

    May 16, 1972

    Grateful Dead Records
Ace is officially classified as Bob Weir's first solo LP, and so it is not technically a Grateful Dead album. Although, the musicians involved were the current line-up of the Dead, plus a few guests, and almost all of the songs became standards in the Dead repertoire.

  • Jerry Garcia (guitar, pedal steel)
  • Bob Weir (guitar, vocals)
  • Donna Godchaux (vocals)
  • Keith Godchaux (piano)
  • Bill Kreutzmann (drums)
  • Phil Lesh (bass, vocals)

(5) Additional Personnel

    • Dave Torbert (bass on track 1)
    • Ed Bogus (string arrangements on track 5)
    • Luis Gasca (horns on tracks 2, 6, 7)
    • Hadley "Snooky" Flowers (horns on tracks 2, 6, 7)
    • The Space Rangers (horns on tracks 2, 6, 7)

Album Notes

Talking about Ace in an interview in the early 1980’s Weir said: “That was a Grateful Dead record, as far as I’m concerned. And I don’t do that material with my side groups. ….. It was all me singing, all my songwriting. I started by using a couple of different musicians, and it just settled in to being a Grateful Dead record right quick”.
