May 23, 1976 was my first “Show” of over a 100 that would follow for me (i.e. Jerry, Bobby-Kingfish, but mostly Grateful Dead shows from 1976 to 1993). I was fortunate enough to have recorded the Dead some 30+times by myself and an other 35 shows with Les Shields and Nick from SLO, CA 1981-87… I REALLY WANT TOO THANK that totally cool dude who walked up to me at the front door an handed me a ticket for FREE (he would NOT take my money!), Before that point, I had tried unsuccessfully for over 2 hours to get a ticket with no luck and all my “older” and “cooler” friends where already inside enjoying the show (I was only 15 yrs old at the time and crashed I was not in with my buddies)… That “free” ticket cost me a life time of cultural and spiritual fulfillment… I owe that guy, who gave me the JGB ticket a TON!!!! I remember Jerry did a smoken’ version of Suguree and everyone around me partied my out (when I did not have a thing to share…. but a smile). God Bless k

I was at this show, living I Venice Beach, CA at the time (I’m a Jersey Shore boy). I remember I was trippin’ my ass of on some fresh “shrooms” we had just purchased. The album “Reflections” had just been released in February & the Dead were on hiatus. The only song that I remember from the show was “Mission in the Rain” because at the break in the song between “for anything I take” & “Someone called my name” you could hear a pin drop and I knew it was coming so I let out a huge holler, scream, yell, whatever you call it during that silence. I think I frightened a few Heads not expecting it (sorry)! Years later a friend of mine had a tape of the show and you can hear me clear as a whistle. A pretty obscure show, no set list listed in Deadbase IX. Those were the “daze”!
