I was there, I was 18 years old. My boyfriend (later to be my husband) and I camped lakeside and spent two days there, then packed up and went to RFK for the epic Sunday Grateful Dead/Allman Bros Band concert. We spent 12 hours at THAT concert. Epic weekend!

This performance was great. A drunkard kept yelling for taking the hippies off the stage. The performance remained perfect. At last, without any facial expression at all, Jerry used a musical rest to give the guy a glorious finger, making sure he saw it, then resumed playing as though he never stopped. Excellent response.

Camped with our friends a band named Orphan who had been a back up band for Jonathan Edwards. It was surreal. Jonathan played his Shanty song as we all sat around a blazing fire singing along with him. We barely slept for a few hours anticipating a special appearance by Old And In The Way very early the next morning. The next thing I remember we were dancing in front of a very small stage to Old And In The Way around dawn. Jerry’s hair pulled into two pigtails, the music was clear and crisp and the audience was small and intimate. It was an amazing once in a lifetime experience, a magical stop on the way to the the Dead and Allman Brothers shows at RFK Stadium. Unfortunately we left our tent and camping equipment at the Fairgrounds and when we returned after the Dead shows on Monday the Fairgrounds were empty and our belongings were gone. Oh well. What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been.

Sunday morning, woke up to the sound of Jerry’s guitar floating over the hills on the wind, drifting into my ears as I lay in my sleeping bag. I jumped up and ran to the stage on the lake hoping the Dead had decided to make an early morning visit before their gig at RFK. I had made a choice to see Old and In The Way instead of the Dead that weekend. It seemed feasible the Dead might show. It was live. Other bands had made special unannounced appearances. I was so excited!!! Europe ’72 was being played on the sound system at a redneck blue grass event in Warrenton, Virginia? Yep! Sorry to leave you so abruptly that morning, Robin my dear.
