Show #5. I lost the other 4 guys I was with second set. We were all too high & got split up. It rained with thunder & lightning during Playing in the Band & The Wheel. Shirt off letting the rain wash over me. During Scarlet I shook the persons hand beside me right at the the line “ strangers stopping strangers….”. The dude looked confused LoL. The trees were full of heads like apes trying to get a better view. Met up with my buds and I was a different person then when I started my day. I went back to Saratoga 35 years later with two of my friends that were at this show to see The Dead & Co. Now in our mid 50’s things were a lot different but you could still feel the magic that once was.

Witnessed this as a 16 year old, on the lawn, not in the seats. With two friends from school and no adult supervision. I remember it as a huge crowd and we were pretty packed in but there was no pushing or ugliness at all. Skies were typical summer upstate NY – completely overcast, though it was very warm. The first set was played as light faded, the second set at dark. A thunderstorm hit when Playing In the Band started, and lasted through a very long jam and the whole bit up until Morning Dew, as I remember. We had lightning going right over our heads, and for a few minutes it was pretty scary. It was a long time ago, but I remember it as a fun and positive experience, probably one of the first “adult” experiences of my life. An older person at this show told me on the way out that we had caught the band on a very good night.

This was my very first show. My brother had an extra ticket, so he asked if I wanted to go. I didn’t even know who The Grateful Dead were. The SPAC setting was the perfect place to experience them! The Morning Dew from this show absolutely floored me! Every hair on my body stood on end during the outro jam…
