I was working with the Student Union on the concert. Before it started I was sitting at the table of a backstage conference room, and Mahavishnu Orchestra violinist Jerry Goodman was tuning/picking at one end. Garcia walked in and sat at the other end of the table with his guitar. They began playing off each other and it went on for 8-10 minutes. Extraordinary. I needed a phone with recording capability.

Opening act, Mahavishnu Orchestra played a powerful set. To Garcia’s credit, his band played a nice set, not trying to match. Both bands were excellent in their own way.

43 years ago, so it’s a little foggy. Set included “Oop Poop Ado,” Get Now Mama While the Gettin’ is Good,” and “Space Jam.” This was Mahavishnu Orchestra’s first tour and they turned everyone’s head around. The Garcia-Wales set was fine, but Mahavishnu had blown our collective minds already.
