I lived in Kings Beach when the Kings Beach Bowl was opened by a pair of brothers who were sheriffs. I was 15 years old when I saw the grateful dead there. This was in Jerry’s “pigtail” days. I approached him during one of the breaks when he was siting on a seating bench at the furtherst corner from the stage. I literally sat with him for the entire 15 minute break and we talked music the entire time. I was a young drummer at the time and actually rehearsed with fellow local musicians in one of the back rooms. Side note – On another night Magic Sam was at the bowl and I noticed the drummer was playing a 1968 Ludwig kit exactly like mine except the lower tom heads were off all of the drums as well as the front kick drum head. I took a closer look after the show and realixzed they were MY drums! His did not arrive in time for the gig so he grabbed mine. I have such amazing memories from the KB Bowl – Spirit, Moby Grape, Iron Butterfly, Country Joe and the Fish. Oh, and the Simultaneious Avalanche Light show was so incredible. I could go on and on about this time in my life…

One of these Kings Beach shows, probably Friday or Saturday was my first. Billy got pissed off about something and it took a lot of coaxing to get him back out for the second set.
