Not for Kids Only (Deluxe Edition) Coming on Vinyl

Whether you’re young or just young at heart, boy, do we have something special for you.  A deluxe edition of Jerry Garcia & David Grisman’s beloved 1993 children’s album Not for Kids Only will see its first ever vinyl release on November 21^st, courtesy of Round Records and Acoustic Disc. This expanded edition features the complete original record remastered by David Grisman, plus outtakes and alternate versions (including two previously unreleased tracks) from Dawg’s vault on 2xLPs pressed by Paramount Pressing with lacquers cut by Chris Muth at Taloowa Mastering.

Awarded a Notable Children’s Recording by the American Library Association, Not for Kids Only is a fun, folksy collection full of charm and mischief. The collection was conceived as a reaction to the revisionist approach to children’s songs. In an interview reflecting the album’s spirit, Garcia shared:

“Kids like weird shit in there, they like crazy stuff lurking around, things with teeth, crazy people. They’re realistic. They know the world is full of weird stuff, and kids sort of prefer weird stuff; they rejoice in it. It’s no big thing, but it’s nice to be able to throw some music back in there that’s originally from that world; bring some of the weirdness back, take a chance a little. I mean it’s sort of trusting the kids that they can handle something more than terminal niceness.”

But as the title implies, it’s not just a kids record – there’s plenty of musicality and wit on display for older ears. Many of the tunes were pulled from the Old-Time String Band Songbook (formerly the New Lost City Ramblers Songbook), done in Jerry & Dawgs own inimitable style. Simple and playful, subtle and sophisticated, this collection of music is recommended for anyone who is, or ever was, a kid.

Not for Kids Only (Deluxe Edition) will have an exclusive edition available through Garcia Family Provisions pressed on whimsical “Jenny Jenkins” green vinyl in a limited edition of 1,000. A black vinyl edition will also be made available online and in stores.
